YPARD Bosnia and Herzegovina

English version

Bosnia and Herzegovina has a very favorable geographical position by occupying the central part of South Eastern Europe, on the cross road between West and East. According to the level of rurality, Bosnia and Herzegovina is on fourth place in Europe, because more than half of the population (around 60%) live in rural areas. The great potential of the country is reflected in the still majority share of non-contaminated soil and clean water, needed for future rural development, which is why there is a strong focus on the development of agriculture, forestry and tourism.

Although generally rural populations engage in agricultural production, which in most cases is an important factor of economic growth, in Bosnia and Herzegovina this is unfortunately not the case. The problems which rural development face are: the fragmentation of existing agricultural holdings, the poor equipment of farms, low competitiveness in production, ie. lack of productivity, lack of government assistance, and lately more frequent migration of young people from the countryside, and even from the country.

If Bosnia and Herzegovina wants to make significant progress, it is necessary to include in their plans and strategies on rural development two participants that are very important for rural development, that is certainly a greater involvement of women in the decision and management issues concerning rural development and also young people, who need more motivation to remain in the country and provide efforts to help revitalize rural areas and activities in villages. In addition, great importance is persistence of three populations at the territory of the state (Serbs, Muslims and Croats), which with its specific traditions and cultures may give special importance attached to issues related to rural development and which can greatly encourage diversification of activities in that field. So, when you take into account the abundance and wealth of natural resources and also share existing human resources, a chance for rural development in Bosnia and Herzegovina is certainly possible.

YPARD Bosnia and Herzegovina thrives to mobilize young people in the country so that they identify themselves and together their specific issues as youth-in-agriculture, imagine solutions and implement activities to address these.
