The Thought for Food experience

This year the Thought for Food global summit was hosted on the 13th & 14th of February in the picturistic city of Lisbon. Words can’t fully describe what took place over these two days and I’m sure those who attended would share my sentiments. Thought for Food is a community, global movement and family dedicated to tackling the global challenge of feeding the estimated 9 billion people through bold, breakthrough solutions generated by the world’s best and brightest university students through uprooting the status quo. Student teams from over 300 universities in 51 countries have participated in developing innovative project concepts that tackle the question: “How are we going to feed 9 billion people by the year 2050?”

This year 10 teams from universities around the world made it to the finals of the TFF Global Challenge. Teams came from universities in Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, India, Sweden, Uganda and the USA. The teams were given the opportunity to pitch their innovate ideas for the opportunity to win $10,000 Grand Prize in seed INVESTMENT for their respective projects.

Congratulations to these amazing young women of Team Innovision (FoodFresh) from University of Dhaka in Bangladesh on winning the 2014 TFF Challenge!. Congratulations also goes out for Teams FoPo Food Powder and Aahaar who each took home the Runner up prizes. All ten teams were winners on this day in my view as all teams did an amazing job. This global exposure will surely catapult all their ideas into fruition. The ideas that were presented are truly game changing, the passion and enthusiasm among the teams and all who attended emanated throughout the summit.

Highlights ranged from the summit speakers such as Sara Menker and Roger Thurow to the workshop sessions on Entertainment that Inspires action, Open sourcing Food security and Nurturing a resilient humanity to name a few. One cannot forget the morning rave which pumped everyone up for the day ahead or the creative rocket-ship design of the venue, how about the tasty food or the light show projections on the rocket-ship. You have your pick, it was all unforgettable. Being able to network was also a highlight, meeting, sharing and interacting with young persons from different countries, different career paths and generally from all walks of life was encouraging.

Who would of thought that taking an opportunity to enter a challenge posted online in 2013 would have lead to this amazing global journey of being an ambassador for TFF.

This years TFF Summit was a truly mind blowing, epic, inspirational and energizing celebration of the power of the next generation in tackling the world’s biggest issues. I am truly grateful to the entire TFF family for making this such an amazing experience. I look forward to what we can achieve together.
