Young People in Agriculture Win Big in the 2nd round of CGIAR Research Programs

Courtney Paisley of YPARD and Sabdiyo of SNV discuss the importance of youth engagement in agriculture.

There is a first time for everything and this was a first for a meeting focused solely on engaging youth within the programmes of the CGIAR

The meeting comprised of colleagues from several CGIAR centres including IITA, ICRAF, IFPRI, ICRISAT, Bioversity, CIP, IWMI, AfricaRice as well as partners including YPARD, SLU, SNV, GYIN, Mkulima Young, CTA and AgriProFocus . It aimed at consolidating suggestions on the way forward for the CGIAR to address youth in agriculture in their work.  The room heard views from the youth (including YPARD) on the best practices for youth engagement, what the CGIAR is doing and how we should approach it from the CGIAR and partners sides when engaging young people in agricuture.

In the course of the year, CGIAR had announced a number of workshops aimed at youth engagement in agriculture and private engagement by the CGIAR. These worshops ,some of which are currently ongoing, focussed on ways in which CGIAR centers could mobilize young people in agriculture as well as scaling up of public and private partnerships.

As someone who is continually trying to persuade organisations to pay more attention to youth in agriculture, it felt like things were really beginning to turn for the better. Partners from different organizations were brought in to add their experiences and expertise as the realization dawned on many that no single organization is able to tackle this massive challenge alone.

While there was no final decision on a way forward, the room agreed that youth are a critical element that the CGIAR must include in its research. As such, there should be mandatory reporting requirements for youth in agriculture from the CGIAR and all organisations.  A platform on youth within the CGIAR would be a welcome initiative but to make it more informed, there was a clear demand for partners to be included.  This is no small challenge to be addressed by one party rather, working together for a more integrated approach is  quite essential.
