Post Doctoral Fellow in Agricultural Economics - South Asia

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is seeking an
Agricultural Economics Post-doctoral Fellow (PDF)
for the Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA). The PDF will seek to enhance the
understanding of the micro-level constraints
to rapid productivity growth and adoption of resource conserving technologies around eight
research hubs in intensive cereals systems
across South Asia, an activity which aims to contribute to enhanced technology targeting and
improved policies for inclusive agricultural
growth. The PDF will, thereby, help identify hub specific technology needs and opportunities,
system components, and combinations
that best meet farmers´ livelihoods for increasing overall impact. The PDF will be posted to
CIMMYT´s New Delhi office and will be
expected to work throughout the northern South Asia region (particularly India, Pakistan,
Nepal and Bangladesh). The appointment will
be for a period of three years.
The primary responsibilities will include:
Conduct surveys (i.e. field work, analysis, reporting) to assess the threats and
opportunities for wheat/rice/maize systems and
livelihoods in eight research hubs in intensive cereals systems across South Asia.
Conduct surveys to assess the constraints to adoption and patterns of adoption, diffusion
and impacts of improved varieties and
other technologies in wheat/rice/maize cropping systems in these eight research hubs.
Participate in activities designed to accelerate more widespread adoption of improved
agricultural production technologies.
Support analyses of selected policy issues related to intensification of cereal systems
Contribute to CIMMYT´s training and institutional capacity strengthening efforts,
particularly in relation to social science and
multidisciplinary team work
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications
Recently earned PhD in agricultural economics, resource economics, economics, or
other related discipline
Strong quantitative analysis skills
Experience designing and implementing socioeconomic household field surveys
Ability to travel extensively in rural areas
Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
The ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary, multicultural, multi-
institutional team
