Summer school - Experimental Auctions - Italy

Summer course  The summer school "Experimental Auctions: Theory and Applications in Food Marketing and Consumer Preferences Analysis" is aimed at learning the fundamentals and the recent advances of experimental auctions. It will provide the appropriate techniques to construct an experimental design, with software applications and workshops regarding specific problems in the fields of food market valuation. It will also provide the appropriate knowledge of the models used in the experimental auction literature for the data analysis. Results interpretation and policy implications will be also discussed.

Lectures are given from Monday July 3 to Saturday July 8, 7 hours per day. As a general structure, each day is based on 4 periods of teaching (2 in the morning before lunch break and 2 in the afternoon and early evening), dealing with Theory, Applications, and Tutorial on pc. A certificate will be awarded to all participants. A final exam is scheduled on Saturday July 8 for those who need the certificate of attendance to be associated to a grade in order to ask for credits recognition.

The hosting institution is the Italian Federation of Agriculture and Forestry Graduates (FIDAF). It is an Italian non-profit association of graduates in agriculture and forestry. It is the Federation of local associations of graduates in agriculture and forestry spread all over Italy.

Target Audience

The course is open to consultants, graduate students, PhD students, academics, and other practitioners, with a master’s degree in agriculture, economics, statistics, or equivalent degrees. Students with a bachelor degree who are preparing their master’s degree dissertation may also be exceptionally considered, depending on supervisor's recommendation. 

Admission

In order to maintain the highest standards, the enrollment is limited to a maximum of 40 students. Applications will be accepted in order of submission until the course limit has been reached.

Should the limit be reached, the following submissions will be put in a waitlist. We reserve the right to select from the waitilist the applicants who will receive the most benefits from the course, based on their qualifications and experience.

The applications will be evaluated on the basis of curriculum vitae and motivations indicated in the letter of application. A presentation letter by an academic supervisor (teacher or researcher) endorsing the candidate will also be considered and can be sent by e-mail to the Director of the Summer School.

Program

1. Overview

  • Overview, motivation, and valuation theory; 
  • WTP and WTA gap, induced value auctions, test theory;
  • Contingent valuation and hypothetical bias: dichotomous choices, payment cards, etc..
  • Calibration methods and cheap talk.

2. Auctions

  • Auction theory: incentive compatibility;
  • Econometric models for auction data;
  • Empirical modeling of data from auctions;
  • Experimental Auction case studies;
  • Examples of Auctions (computerized);
  • Auctions in practice/design issues (endowment vs full bidding, multiple rounds, multiple products, stochastic fees, sample size, bid affiliation, training, etc.);
  • Hands-on programming auctions in ztree;
  • Models for data analysis;
  • Analysis of auction data;
  • Class simulation;
  • Summing up, questions and discussion;

3. Final test

  • Presentation of participants' own project;
  • Online questionnaire test
