Tropenbos International, Post - doc researcher and director

The mission of Tropenbos International (TBI), a foundation based in the
Netherlands, is improving tropical forest management for people,
conservation and sustainable development. TBI is funded by the
Government of the Netherlands and other international donors.
TBI operates joint programmes directed at research, capacity building and
institutional development based on the needs of forest sector stakeholders
in the programme countries, in partnership with local and international
organisations. TBI is currently working in Cameroon, Colombia, Ghana,
Indonesia, Vietnam, Suriname, Guyana and Bolivia. A programme in DR
Congo is in development.

Tropenbos International is developing a research and capacity building programme
in support of the conservation and wise use of tropical forests in the Congo Basin,
with activities in Cameroon and DR Congo, supported by the Netherlands Ministry of
Foreign Affairs.

Principal components of the function:

1. Preparation and implementation of a Tropenbos International research
programme in the
Democratic Republic of Congo
2. Management of the TBI office in Kisangani (DR Congo)
Other relevant job information

-Experience and competencies
o Expertise in development-relevant research supported by a PhD degree in a
discipline relevant to tropical forests, preferably in West and/or Central Africa; or
matching practical research qualifications supported by working experience and an
academic track record.
o Affinity with development issues, in particular related to forests and
livelihoods/forestry;
o Ability to coordinate and guide an interdisciplinary team as part of a regional
programme;
o Willingness to work in a remote and challenging, but rewarding environment of
Central and Eastern DR Congo
o Pioneering mentality
o Fluent in English and basic knowledge of French
o Some knowledge of the political, administrative, social and economic aspects of
the countries of the Congo Basin
o Some expertise in the management (international) projects
Terms of employment
o An appointment until June 2011; with the possibility for extension.
o Salary is competitive and depends on education, and experience.
o Allowances are paid based on a stay in DR Congo.
