This position will be mainly based in Marsabit with some travel to Yabelo, South Ethiopia.
The position would be part of the team developing, assessing the impact of, and scaling-up index-based livestock insurance (IBLI) products. A comprehensive pilot has already been commercially launched in Marsabit District of Northern Kenya and research into its implementation in Southern Ethiopia has already begun (see, www.ilri.org/ibli). Interest from donors, development partners, and government requires scaling up of the Marsabit pilot into other arid districts of Northern Kenya.
Responsibilities
1. IBLI Implementation Support
- Lead effort to engage field-level stakeholders on matters related to implementation
- Work to ensure that partner relationships at field- level are okay.
- Facilitating links with other project partners on the ground
- Support in the development of marketing and extension tools for IBLI
- Support in training of extension workers in the field
2. Group Savings and Loan IBLI integration support
- Support in the group formation on the ground
- Provide technical backstopping for training of the groups on IBLI on the ground
- Support in the training of the Community Based Trainers on IBLI
3. Field work Support
- Field survey enumeration supervision
- Support in training of field survey enumerators
Required Skills and Qualifications
- A diploma in Community Development, Agricultural Extension, Business Administration or Social Studies from a recognised institution.
- At least two years of field experience with socioeconomic surveys and implementation of innovative projects.
- Demonstrable field- level partner liaison skills and experience
- Previous experience in and ability to maintain good relations with the participating pastoralists and stakeholders
- Knowledge and/or experience with community engagement in the field
- Experience in field survey enumeration supervision
- Knowledge of livestock and familiarity with arid lands issues
- Creative and dynamic person who can operate both individually and as part of a team
- Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to work with minimum supervision
- Good presentation and oral/written communication and skills
- Willingness to learn new field techniques where appropriate
- Willingness to travel and work in often difficult field conditions for extended periods at a time.
Terms of appointment
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus with frequent travel to the field and is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 2-year fixed contract subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
Job Level and Salary
This position is job Grade 1C, with a starting gross salary of KES 61,556 per month. The benefits package includes pension, medical and other insurances within ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff Scheme.
