PhD position_policies for a resilient European agriculture

The European farming system is characterized by a complex multi-level governance context and various policies which directly affect farming activities. The Common Agricultural Policy and its various national transpositions are the most overarching policy framework. This project aims to (i) analyse to what extent these policies enhance the resilience of the farming sectors; and (ii) assess how the policy framework can be improved to better support the resilience of European farming systems.

The focus of this position

The European farming system is characterized by a complex multi-level governance context and various policies which directly affect farming activities. The Common Agricultural Policy and its various national transpositions are the most overarching policy framework. This project aims to (i) analyse to what extent these policies enhance the resilience of the farming sectors; and (ii) assess how the policy framework can be improved to better support the resilience of European farming systems.

The research is carried out in Wageningen, and should lead to a Ph.D. dissertation. In addition the candidate will work closely with two other Wageningen-based Ph.D. students, and the other members of the SURE-Farm consortium, and will regularly travel to these partners for collaborative work and meetings.

This project is a collaboration of the Public Administration and Policy Group (PAP) and the Strategic Communication group (COM) of Wagenigen university and research. The project is embedded in the EU-funded program (Horizon2020) “Towards Sustainable and Resilient EU FARMing systems (SURE-Farm)”. SURE-Farm is led by Wageningen University & Research, includes 16 partners (13 countries) and has a strong transdisciplinary approach

Requirements

Wageningen University and Research Centre is looking for a social scientist with a Master degree in public administration, environmental policy studies or political science, or another relevant social science program, and who is interested in agricultural policies  (the common agricultural policy) and in adaptive governance theories.  Fluency in English and excellent academic writing and oral communication skills are essential. Experience with interdisciplinary research and in-depth knowledge of qualitative research methods is an advantage.

Benefits

Wageningen University and Research Centre offers a PhD position for a period of 18 months, extended by another 30 months after positive evaluation. Gross salary will increase from € 2191 in the first year up to € 2801 in the last year based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week). You will be working in a pleasant and inspiring environment in the context of an innovative research consortium.
