Agriculture: A three course-meal

This straight to the point post gives a brief overview of the agricultural sector.

Just like every other sector, agriculture can be divided into three streams:

  • Upstream sector: This basically involves planting and rearing. Farmers here plant the seed and rear the animals. No form of value is added here just core farming.
  • Middle stream sector: The process of getting the harvested crops and matured animals to the final consumers is what the sector deals with. Service providers to farmers are also in this sector.
  • Downstream: agricultural produce could be eaten raw or processed. Processing of agricultural produce to add value is the core objective of this sector.

Every youth with the thought of getting into agriculture must be sure which sector he or she wants to operate in. And even though the core aim of committing to business in the agricultural sector is to make profit, we can still find a window around us to contribute our own quota to agri-development in our community.
