Call for nominations
The Justus von Liebig Award, endowed by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation F.V.S. in Hamburg,
was awarded regularly between 1949 and 2006. During that period, the prize was awarded to
76 distinguished individuals who had made outstanding contributions to the science and
practice of agriculture. On the basis of an agreement with the Toepfer
Foundation, we shall continue the award with a slightly modified aspiration, beginning in
2009.
Individuals who have made preeminent contributions to the improvement of world food
supply, the mitigation of under- and malnourishment, or the improvement of rural livelihood
while preserving natural resources are eligible to be nominated. There are no national or
other limitations, and the prize can be awarded for both singular achievements / contributions
and lifetime accomplishments.
1. Scientific achievements in research and/or teaching with regard to the agricultural
sciences

1.2 Plant breeding
1.3 Soil science
1.4 Agro-ecology
1.5 Animal husbandry and breeding
1.6 Agricultural economics
1.7 Agricultural engineering incl. irrigation techniques
1.8 Agro meteorology and climate research
1.9 Nutritional science and medicine
1.10 Agro-oriented information technology
2. Entrepreneurial, managerial and organizational achievements, i. e. leaders in
2.1 Agricultural production
2.2 Agricultural supply industry
2.3 Rural cooperatives
2.4 Professional associations
2.5 Public administration
2.6 National and international organizations
3. Humanitarian achievements, i. e. leaders of
aid organisations or non-governmental organisations (NGO)
4. Achievements with regard to communication of the problems of world nutrition and
possible solutions, i. e. leaders of
journalism and media
The prize will be awarded every other year, beginning in 2009, at the University of
Hohenheim/Germany. The Award Ceremony will take place on 25 September 2009. The
prize
is endowed with 25,000 Euro.

The decision on the winner will be made by a committee, consisting of
Dr. Frank Plessmann, as representative of the Toepfer Foundation F.V.S., Hamburg
Prof. em. Dr. Hartwig de Haen, as former Deputy Director General of FAO
Dr. Rudolf Müller, as representative of the German Food Industry
Prof. Dr. Uwe Latacz-Lohmann, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional
Sciences, University of Kiel
Prof. em. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Zeddies, as representative of Hohenheim University
Prof. Dr. Peter Stamp, as representative of the North/South Centre of ETH Zürich
Prof. Dr. Johan A. M. van Arendonk, University of Wageningen, prize winner 2006.
The committee acts independently. Its decisions are final. Legal recourse is excluded. The
committee will not give a reason for not having chosen a particular candidate.
